People just assume I’m Tunisian – the Irishman at Club World Cup
As an Irishman attending the Club World Cup in Tunisia, I am constantly mistaken for a local Tunisian. Despite my distinct Irish accent and appearance, people just assume I am Tunisian based on my presence at the tournament.
It is a strange experience to be treated as a Tunisian when I am clearly not, but I take it in stride and enjoy the cultural exchange that comes with it. People often approach me speaking in Arabic, only to be surprised when I respond in English.
Being mistaken for Tunisian has allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture and interact with people in a way that I may not have otherwise. I have been welcomed warmly by both locals and fellow visitors to the tournament, despite the initial confusion about my nationality.
While it can be amusing at times to be mistaken for someone I am not, I appreciate the opportunity to connect with others and broaden my perspective on the world. The Club World Cup has been an unforgettable experience for me, filled with surprises and memorable encounters.
Despite the language barrier and cultural differences, I have found common ground with many people at the tournament and have forged unexpected friendships along the way. Being mistaken for Tunisian has opened doors for me that I never would have imagined.
Overall, my time at the Club World Cup in Tunisia has been eye-opening and enriching, thanks in part to the assumptions others have made about my nationality. I have embraced the role of the “Irish Tunisian” and have found joy in engaging with others in this unique way.
